Belgian Draft Horses

Belgian Work Horses

Belgians are often the breed Amish use for field work. One of my favorite sights is to see these impressive gentle giants in the fields plowing in the spring or harvesting in the fall. They are truly a beautiufl sight.

This painting is in oils and is of a team. The drafts and Amish horses often find their way into my art because that is what is around me. One of the benefits of living in Ohio Amish country is to be surrounded by the beautiful farms and these majestic animals.

I had to laugh with my Amish neighbor this morning as he walked down our shared lane. I was stuck on a slick spot of ice and need to get my boys to push me a bit down the gravel lane until I got better traction. My neighbor good naturedly helped out. I thanked him and we remembered last winter when he helped me out of the snow. He asked if I needed his team-- they get me right out! I believe it too!

Girl on Horseback Oil Painting

'Girl on Horseback' Work in Progress Oil Painting

This is the last of my Christmas commissions. I love this pose because I love how it highlights the girl's relationship with her horse. His ears are attentive to her and his eye is so soft and sweet. I may need to soften his expression when I go back to do more fine tuning. I do want that soft eye.

I got started on this last night by preparing the board and doing the inital outline drawing. I began painting today. This is after a morning of painting. I had to simplify some things just for the sake of time and obviously I am not done yet. Since this is oil I need to build in drying time but fortunatley this one is local. I had other late commissions that needed to be shipped but I think I am going to do okay on all of them! Hooray! I hope to complete this over the weekend but it looks like it will be a busy one. I am at Lehman's for a painting Demo and mural painting on Saturday. Friday is Canton's Shop Hop and I want to be at my art studio during that just minus the icy roads of last week! My kids are all in sports and they have sporting events, my house is a mess and I have Christmas shopping to do! LOL! But I am going to concentrate on the spirit of the season and enjoy my family and friends, be thankful for the business and just keep painting! :)

Take care and thanks for stopping by! If you are in Kidron on Saturday stop by to say hi and see my murals! If you are in downtown Canton onFriday stop by suite #222 above Second April to see my studio!

This Saturday I will be at Lehman's doing a painting demonstration from 10-2:00. I am adding on to the murals I've done over the past two years in their buggy barn and outdoor cafe area. Stop by to see the murals and new artwork!
I've been helping Lehman's schedule Ohio Arts and Crafts Guild members to do demos all fall and winter. We have had a wide variety of talented people in almost every Sat. doing things like wool rug hooking, pottery, fiber arts, oil painting, decorative art, beeswax ornament, pewter ornaments, dog and cat art, wood carving and wood turning. We will take a break and resume demos in the spring so be sure to check back to see whats in store!
To see some of my completed artwork go to http://www.suesteiner.com Pictured above is a recent 'work in progress' oil painitng commission of an elk. This is almost 3/4 of the way done. A few final touches and then I need to put in the foreground before I sign it and call it done. For more info on commissioning me I can be reached by e-mail at artbysue@hotmail.com
